What is Conscious Breathwork?

Did you know the way we breathe has a major impact on our overall health and wellbeing?  Our fast-paced, stress-producing lifestyles leave little time to breathe, much less attend to how we are breathing. 

We breathe 24,000 times a day, yet most of these breaths are unconscious, and use only 30% of our respiratory capacity. Breath is the only vital system we have in our body that works both consciously and unconsciously. 

Conscious breathing, as the name implies, starts by being aware. By simply noticing our breath, we light up a different part of our brain and can take control of the rhythm, rate and depth of our breathing. 

The benefit of shifting from unconscious, inhibited breathing to conscious, deep diaphragmatic breathing can be life-changing!

Terri Peterson, TBF, SBF, RPh, is an expert in the field of Conscious Breathwork and is a certified facilitator in both Soul Breathing™ and Transformational Breath®.

She has studied Global Somatic™ breathwork and Integrative Breathwork, as well as a myriad of ancient breathing practices. Terri has also explored many forms of energy work and has received certifications in Pranic Healing® and Reiki.

Terri is a living example of ‘West meets East’ as she continues to expand her 20 years of holistic work in tandem with her 4 decades as a Registered Pharmacist.

A Note from Terri

Breath is the foundation of life. Yet we spend most of our time breathing unconsciously, never noticing if our breath is inhibited or if our breath is full. When we’re born, we instinctively know how to breathe. As life happens, we constrict our breath. Our inherent breath pattern falls away and a new breath pattern emerges, no longer supporting our body optimally. 

When we become aware of our breath, it not only changes how we breathe, but it activates different parts of the nervous system. Conscious breathwork has been clinically proven to be an efficient therapeutic tool in treating many physical and mental disorders, such as high blood pressure and chronic anxiety. 

Conscious diaphragmatic breathing is a skill that can be honed with time and practice, yet the basics are easy.
